Harmoniorkestret Tonica is a gathering place for skilled amateur musicians, who meet to cultivate our shared interest in playing music. Some of our members have played in the wind band for several years and we currently have musicians between the ages 20 to 82. We also regularly have students who join the band while they study in Aarhus.
Our repertoire is broad and covers genres from classical music to modern pop, swing, musicals, marches, and songs.
The band was founded in 1940 and is thus the oldest wind band in Århus. We play 4-5 concerts a year, and our New Year’s concert in Musikhuset Århus and Viennese concert in Århus Town Hall in the autumn are among our proud traditions. In addition, we play various concerts such as prom and church concerts. Since 2013 we have also played the opening concert at the harbour concerts in Ry.
In 2023 we tried our hands at a larger symphony by the composer Johan De Meij, Symphony no. 1, ”The Lord of the Rings” from 1988 which was played with great enthusiasm and to the excitement of the audience in Generationernes Hus, Aarhus Ø.
Our conductor is Boris Kertsman, who is a trained solo trumpeter from the Conservatory of Music in Århus. We also regularly use guest conductors, e.g. for our Viennese concert where Jørgen Fuglebæk several times has led the band safely through everything from waltzes to gallops within the tradition-bound genre.
When our conductor is occasionally unable to lead a rehearsal, we get help from conductors such as Niels-Ole Bo Johansen, Michelle Rakers and Lars M. Birkelund Olsen.
